What is the Time Person of the Year?
Every year since 1927, Time magazine has released a Person of the Year edition. In the past, they used to be called “Man of the Year” or “Woman of the Year.”
Occasionally, an issue will come out that will name someone as the person of the decade or century, not just the year.

The real world is not as tightly controlled a setting as a field or court, and none of us knows what is going to happen tomorrow, much less months from now.
How Does Time Select the Person of the Year?
“Person of the Year” should not be looked at as an award. It does not necessarily recognize the person with the most positive influence on the world each year. Sometimes it does, but sometimes the selections are people who had very negative impacts, or a mix of positive and negative impacts.
Time says the Person of the Year “for better or for worse… has done the most to influence the events of the year.”
Here are a few more important things to know:
Time usually selects a person for Person of the Year, but not always. Sometimes the “Person” of the Year is actually a group of people, an object, or even an idea.
On some years, Time selects more than one Person of the Year.
Groups of people need not be specific. For instance, Time famously selected “You” as the 2006 Person of the Year, as in everyone everywhere in the world who puts user-generated content online. This has led to the running joke of people listing “Time Person of the Year” in their professional bios.
The same person or persons may be selected more than one time as Person of the Year. For example, Bill Clinton was selected in 1992 and 1998.
The people selected as Person of the Year are often, but not always, politicians.
Again, the Person of the Year is not always a positive figure. Point in case, both Hitler and Stalin have been selected.

While women are recognized more often now as Person of the Year than in the past, you probably will notice while skimming through the list above that the title is usually bestowed on a man.
Another thing worth noting is that sometimes there are series of Person of the Year selections with a uniting theme, like the “Whistleblowers” and the “Good Samaritans.”
When is the Time Person of the Year Announced?
Since the Time Person of the Year is meant to be the most influential person for the entire year, Time usually announces the selection very late in the year. So, you can usually expect to find out who the Person of the Year is in December.
Who Might the 2023 Time Person of the Year Be?
At the time I am writing this, it is the end of June, so we are about halfway through the year. That leaves a lot of time for the global situation to change. But here are some of the top picks for 2023 Person of the Year at this moment based on the odds:
- Volodymyr Zelenskyy
- Elon Musk
- Joe Biden
- Kamala Harris
- Vladimir Putin
Literally every one of these top picks has already been the Person of the Year before, most of them very recently. This by itself does not suggest that none of them would be selected, however.
It is also interesting to note that going by the odds (see below), there are some vastly different opinions about who has a good shot at becoming the Person of the Year for 2023.
Some candidates do not even make both lists. For example, Bovada lists all of these possibilities that BetOnline does not:
- Greta Thunberg
- Ron DeSantis
- Charles III
- Janet Yellen
- Lula Da Silva
- Merrick Garland
- Iran Protestotrs
Meanwhile, BetOnline lists these candidates that Bovada does not:
- Ayisha Siddaqa: (with odds of +1000)
- Jeff Bezos: (with odds of +1200)
- Donald Trump: (with odds of +1200)
What should all of this tell you? That it can be really hard to even figure out the contenders for this distinction. That makes sense. There are a lot of famous and influential people in the world!
This is not to say that trying to figure out the 2023 Person of the Year is equivalent to finding a needle in a haystack, but there is a lot of uncertainty and risk with this type of bet.
I actually have a prediction for the 2023 Person of the Year that is not even listed as an available wager by either of our recommended sportsbooks. I think the “Person” of the Year is going to be ChatGPT.

What Types of Bets Can You Place on the Time Person of the Year?
Right now, we are just seeing futures bets on the person who is selected as Time’s Person of the Year.
But that does not mean that will necessarily be the only type of wager offered. As we get closer, we might see other types of bets. Perhaps, for instance, there will be props like, “Will there be more than one Time Person of the Year in 2023?” or “Will the Time Person of the Year for 2023 be an object?”
Strategies for Betting on the Time Person of the Year
- Keep An Eye On The News
- Remember What The Selection Is About
- Leave Your Bias Out Of It
- Pay Attention To Patterns In Time’s Selections
- Be Aware That Last Minute Changes Can Happen
- Shop The Odds
The best starting point for figuring out who the Person of the Year is going to be is simply to follow news and social media. Keep your fingers on the pulse of the global population.
Here’s the thing though — you may not want to follow the news too closely. It is important not to over-think this. Time isn’t deliberately trying to be unpredictable when they select someone. In fact, the person they choose is usually going to be somebody who is pretty obvious.
If you are following obscure news stories, you have to remember that by definition, those stories are not the ones that are (usually) having a sweeping influence around the globe.
The only exception in a case like this would be if you are following a story that you are confident is going to explode into the limelight late in the year, giving you an edge if you back a dark horse now.
Remember, the Person of the Year selection is about influence. Just because you think someone is important, that does not necessarily mean that everybody else in the world agrees with you.
You need to be looking at the movers and shakers, not simply at everyone who has done anything of great value.
Just as you are looking for someone influential, rather than someone who is merely important, you are also not looking for someone that you simply like.
It is easy to cringe when someone horrible makes the cover of Time magazine, but remember, it is not always an award for good deeds to be the Person of the Year.
In short, you should not bet on who you want to win, simply because you want them to win it. You should bet on who you think is going to win, even if you hate their guts. Nobody wanted to see Hitler on the cover of Time magazine. Nevertheless, he was a logical choice that year.
Take a look at the most recent decade to see if you can spot a trend in the selections. Is there an increasing number of women, for example? Or an increase in selections of groups of people? Does it look like Time is starting a series of related selections? How often are names repeating from previous years? How often are you seeing multiple selections for a single year?
Originally, the 1941 selection was supposed to be Walt Disney’s Dumbo. Time would have declared the elephant “Mammal of the Year.”
But on December 7th, Pearl Harbor was bombed. So, Dumbo did not make the cover. Instead, it went to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
That is a huge last-minute change, and one that most bettors probably could not have seen coming. Then again, with international tensions as high as they were, perhaps in hindsight it was not a complete surprise.
There is no such thing as a sure bet with the Person of the Year, because you never know what could happen at the 11th hour. Keep that in mind when you are choosing your stake size.
Finally, we always recommend shopping the odds before you place any sports bet. Odds differ between sportsbooks, and some are more competitive than others.
But this is an extra big deal when you are betting on the Person of the Year. Remember, not only can the odds vary dramatically from one betting site to another, but even the selection of available bets can be radically different!
If you do not shop around, you are bound to miss out on potentially lucrative opportunities.
